Formulation and Processing of Rubber Sealing Products

Posted on11 October 2025

The performance of rubber sealing products depends on a well-designed formulation and processing technology.

Selecting the appropriate rubber type forms the foundation:

Nitrile Rubber (NBR) offers excellent oil resistance and is suitable for applications below 120 °C.

Acrylic Rubber (ACM) can withstand temperatures up to 170 °C.

Fluoroelastomer (FKM) and Silicone Rubber (VMQ) are used in high-temperature environments.

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) is preferred for weather-resistant sealing strips due to its outstanding ozone and aging resistance.

Vulcanization System

In the vulcanization system, to enhance heat resistance and reduce compression set, peroxide curing agents (such as DCP) or efficient sulfur curing systems (low-sulfur, high-accelerator formulations) are commonly adopted.

Reinforcement and Filler System

The reinforcing–filling system has a significant impact on product performance:

O-rings and oil seals often employ semi-reinforcing carbon black or coarse particle carbon black (e.g., SRF or FT) to ensure good elasticity and low deformation.

For dynamic sealing applications, highly wear-resistant carbon black may be added.

Fluoroelastomer (FKM) compounds typically use small amounts of coarse carbon black.

Silica (white carbon black) improves adhesion and enhances tensile strength, often used together with silane coupling agents to optimize bonding performance.

Processing Considerations

From a processing perspective, it is essential to ensure that the rubber compound maintains good flowability, dimensional stability during extrusion, and a low risk of scorching.
To reduce the friction coefficient, additives such as graphite powder or molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) can be incorporated.

For high-grade sealing strips, a high level of carbon black purity and minimal residue content are required to guarantee a smooth, defect-free surface.
Through systematic optimization of the formulation and curing system, Sunlite achieves comprehensive performance in mechanical strength, wear resistance, and chemical/medium resistance, meeting the stringent demands of modern sealing applications.
